Have you seen the old paintings of Indian Gods? If yes, it was surely painted by the same man. His name is Raja Ravi Varma, one of the most prominent artists in Indian Art. He was born on April 29, 1848 at Kilimanoor, Travancore (present day Kerala). He died on 2 October 1906 (aged 58) Attingal, Travancore (British Raj)
Raja Ravi Varma, who is considered as one of the greatest painters in the history of Indian art created amazing paintings which revolved mainly around the Indian Puranas (ancient mythological stories) and the great Indian epics - Mahabharata and Ramayana.
He took Indian Art all over the world with his beautiful art techniques. He managed to combine the Indian tradition with the techniques of the european art which gave his more prominence. He managed to spread his works to every house hold by making affordable lithographs, which were affordable even to the poor.
In 1904, Viceroy Lord Curzon, on behalf of the British King Emperor, bestowed upon Varma the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal. A college dedicated to fine arts was also constituted in his honour at Mavelikara, Kerala.
